The Bernards Township Health Department is conducting the Annual Health Screening on Thursday, May 4th and Friday, May 5th from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. at St. James Church located at 184 S. Finley Ave. in Basking Ridge. In-person pre-registration is required at the Bernards Township Health Department at 262 S. Finley Avenue in Basking Ridge from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday starting Monday, April 17th.
This screening includes comprehensive blood work such as a lipid profile measuring total, HDL and LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, as well as blood pressure check, urinalysis, and stool hemocult. Cost for the screening is $35 for residents and $45 for non-residents with an additional fee for optional Thyroid Screening and for measure of Hemoglobin A1c.
The Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test may be used to screen for and diagnose diabetes and pre-diabetes in adults. A non-diabetic person will have an A1c result less than 5.7%. For most diabetics, it is recommended that they aim to keep their hemoglobin A1c below 7%. Results should always be discussed with your healthcare provider.
This year the FIT (Fecal Immunochemical Test) is offered for an additional cost of $15 for residents and $20 for non-residents. This test is easy to do and requires only one sample yearly and is done in place of the hemoccult test. It is a more sensitive test and detects only human blood, not blood or dye from food.
The Annual Health Screening is a great way to identify health concerns to ensure optimal and timely treatment. In addition, if someone has elevated blood lipids, diabetes, hypertension or another chronic health issue, this is a great way to check their progress in addition to their yearly physical with their doctor.
