On February 2, 2020 at approximately 1:07 p.m., Morris County Park Police were dispatched to Cooper Mill located on Route 24 in Chester Township regarding a report of a hiker bitten by a raccoon.
The incident occurred while a group of hikers were hiking along the river approximately two miles in on the green trail. The raccoon followed the hikers for about 1/4 mile before attacking and biting one of the male hikers in the group. The hiker was transported to Morristown Medical Center for medical attention and is receiving post exposure rabies treatment. The raccoon was submitted for rabies testing.
THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT WAS INFORMED ON FEBRUARY 5, 2020 THAT THE RACCOON SUBMITTED FOR TESTING WAS POSITIVE FOR RABIES VIRUS.
