The NJ Forest Fire Service plans to conduct prescribed burns on public forests and meadows in Morris County parks this spring. In Chester Township, burns will be scheduled for 17 acres of the Mt. Paul Memorial County Park, and 31 acres of the Black River Facilities. Residents will likely notice smoke and a burning odor in the surrounding area during the event. Dates are not set yet, as they are entirely weather dependent.
Prescribed burns reduce risk of wildfire by removing accumulated vegetative fuels, reduce invasive plant infestation, and help manage wildlife habitat. They are only carried out if weather conditions permit. You can read more about prescribed burns at this link.
