Following discussions with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), I'm pleased to share that we've secured a second and significantly larger allocation of bear-resistant trash cans.
Last year, we received 166 cans at no cost through a DEP grant. This year, we have been awarded an additional 370 cans. This expansion will allow us to fulfill all remaining requests from the waitlist, with a surplus that will be distributed through a lottery system.
All cans provided in this round will be 64-gallon models. Residents who requested a 96-gallon can will instead be offered the 64-gallon size.
As with last year, these cans are completely free for residents. The only requirement is that recipients complete a follow-up survey sent by the DEP after receiving their can.
For those who did not apply in the last round we have opened up a second list which will be for any additional cans that show up this year or in subsequent years (no guarantees the grant is renewed).
